There were three ways for a spy to get out of his situation. Walk away at the first opportunity, die, or slip out in disguise. When King Philip’s head scout ordered his arrest, Scanlan Saltare Kasia chose the third option.

There were two ways for Tribune Lepidus to handle an exposed spy. Send Optio Kasia to headquarters for evaluation or give him a new mission. Lepidus decided on the second option. And that’s why Scanlan Kasia was hunted by the Egyptian army and the army of the Seleucid Empire.

And there was one hard and fast rule of spying: Never, ever form an attachment. Scanlan agreed. But the ball of white fur with the expressive eyes, who like him, was far from home couldn’t be left behind. And so the Little Lioness, even as a clumsy puppy, became an undercover Legion scout dog, joining Scanlan on his mission of Lies and Shadows.
